This arch leads to the courtyard which was the residence of the abbot of San Nicola’s Basilica of Bari, during the Norman period, that is when Riccardo Siniscalco gave the Castle to the Church. We can still see some traces of the old residence, in the house above the arch. The pointed arch and the double lancet window which surmounts it are also still clear.

The Arch, dedicated to Our Lady of Constantinople, leads to an open space which belonged, in the past, to the community. There is a 16th century spring water well in the centre of the courtyard, and external stairs lead to the only room which usually formed an house.

Inside the courtyard there is part of the walls which formed the 17th century gentlemanly house, probably rising on a much older building.

No doubt, it is one of the most renowned corners of Gioia del Colle. A superb 13th-century arch with an ashlar which radiates from the centre, leads to the medieval courtyard where the so-called “Connestabile”, the captain of the Swabian troops, lived. An elegant but walled-up double lancet window indicates the imperial officer’s house. The arch is surmounted by the copy of a 18th century paint which is now kept in the Town Hall. Both the arch and the courtyard are dedicated to the family who owned them in the 15th century.

The arch name calls to mind the 12th century delegation of San Nicola’s Basilica in Gioia del Colle. It has no particular style but its function of bridge between two houses is very significant. In the inner courtyard, there was a wood stove to cook the necessary bread for all the inhabitants of the old town of Gioia.

The Tower House dates back to the 15th century. It was probably built on a pre-existing medieval fortification which was used as both a lookout post and a place for marsh bird hunting (there are some openings for the bullet throw, on the terrace).

The 15-meter building is broken up by two stone cornices and is particularly elegant in the higher part where the Renaissance style is clearly visible, with main regard to the central window which is subdivided into four sections by a Greek cross. The roof is supported by a series of round arches. Even the pointed-arch entrance is very interesting.

Distilleria Cassano is considered one of the most important monuments of industrial archeology in Apulia. Property of Paolo Cassano since 1859, the distillery was ranked among the top four in this area (along  with the ones in Castellana, Bari and Barletta), exporting its products abroad. The activity went off splendidly until 1914, when the company went into winding-up. The distillery passed to the Taranto family, who gradually left it in a state of neglect. In 1970 it was given to USL (today Azienda Sanitaria Locale) in order to turn it into a hospital. The building was finally sold to the city of Gioia del Colle in 1997. Distilleria Cassano represents a pioneering example of apulian industry. For this reason the Ministry of Culture and Environment decreed its historical value and included it on the list of monumental and environmental heritage. In 2006 the renovation work began and today the distillery hosts festivals and concerts.

In the little square dedicated to Cesare Battisti, there is the War Monument, built, in 1923, by the notable architect Giuseppe Masi from Gioia,.

There has been a bronze bust portraying a 1st World War infantryman (another work by Masi) next to the monument until 1944. The bust was removed at the end of the 2nd World War because it seemed to portray the face of Benito Mussolini. Today, you can visit it, outside the Church of San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph) in Montursi (10 km from Gioia). The monument is composed of a stone column which rises on a base formed by indented shelves by way of steps. Bronze bas-reliefs and the names of the fallen during the two world wars alternate on the side facades. A bronze sculpture portraying a flame with two eagles is placed on the top of the column.
