Grotto in Castellana Grotte
Grotte di Castellana
The underground cavities extend for about 3 kilometers and reach a depth of 72 meters below ground level at the cave entrance.
It is possible to visit the caves by two different guided tours; a short tour, about one kilometre long and lasting 50 minutes, and the longer tour, lasting 2 hours. The natural entrance of the caves is an enormous 60-meter deep chasm called La Grave, which in the local dialect means “the wide chasm”. From here visitors can reach the “Black Cave”, so named for the particular colour on the cave walls due to the presence of the microscopic Scolecobasidium Anelli fungi. Very interesting caves are: the Grotta Bianca (deemed "the most splendid cave in the world") and the cave of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, named after the shape of a large stalagmite which reminds the famous leaning tower of Tuscany.
