The building was a hunting estate belonging to the counts of Conversano Acquaviva of Aragon, who dwelled in the castle and used it as a shooting lodge, as it was surrounded by an oak grove and maquis shrubland stretching an area of over two thousand "tomoli", amounted to 1260 hectars; in fact the only surviving  specimen at present is a five centuries old oak.

According to a legend, the Marchione castle was linked to the castle of Conversano by a secret passage.

The 19th century was the worst period for the castle, as it was used as farmhouse and the grove was tilled. In 1920, the princess Giulia Acquaviva of Aragon took possession of the Marchione castle and began its restoration.
